Response of somatomedins (IGF-I and IGF-II) in lactating cows to variations in dietary energy and protein and treatment with recombinant n-methionyl bovine somatotropin

Article Abstract:

The effect of energy and protein intake on serum insulin-like growth factors I and II (IGF-I and IGF-II) concentrations in lactating cows was determined. Lactating cows were assigned in diets of either high or low crude protein and net energy intake. Serum concentrations of IGF-I and IGF-II were determined before and after bovine somatotropin (bST) administration. Plasma IGF-I and IGF-II levels were not affected by the type and amount of diet. However injection with bST resulted in a differential increase in both IGF-I and IGF-II levels correlated with the differential increase in milk production depending on the type of diet.

Ethanol-fed Sprague-Dawley rats maintain normal levels of insulin-like growth factor I

Article Abstract:

Rats were pair-fed ethanol and control liquid diets to investigate the influence of chronic ethanol ingestion on insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I). Ethanol appears to hamper growth by modifying this aspect of the growth-promoting endocrine system. The effect of two different feeding schedules was also investigated. When meal-fed the day before testing, serum IGF-I and hepatic IGF-I mRNA levels remained normal. However, when animals received their entire ration in one feeding, these IGF-I levels were significantly elevated, implying a nutritional dissimilarity despite identical dietary caloric content.

Abomasal infusion of casein enhances nitrogen retention in somatotropin-treated steers

Article Abstract:

A study was done on the effects of abomasal infusion of casein on nitrogen retention in somatotropin-treated steers. Results show a 20% increase in nitrogen retention upon infusion of casein into the abomasum. Significant responses to bovine somatotropin (bST) were observed especially when amino acid supply is enhanced. Furthermore, bST was found to change amino acid requirements for growth so that less protein is required for every unit of lean tissue accumulated.
