Effects of calorie restriction and Omega-3 fatty acids on autoimmunity and aging

Article Abstract:

Age-associated changes in T cell subsets and their cellular immune properties are shown to be prevented by moderately reduced calorie intake (CR). This is because moderate CR minimizes the formation of proinflammatory cytokines and some growth factors. Researchers have noted little change in CD4+ and CD8+ T cell subset ratios between animals fed at their pleasure and those on CR. Significant age-related functional changes between the two groups were observed, however.

Diet, age, and the immune system

Article Abstract:

Elderly people may experience an impaired immune response due to aging and a poor diet. Malnutrition has been shown to lead to severe immunosuppression, but even a moderate dietary change can affect the immune system. Deficiencies of iron, zinc, and vitamins A, E, B6 and B12 can affect the immune system. Aging itself can affect the immune system by altering T cell subsets and reducing the production of cytokines such as interleukin-2.

Changes in protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism with aging: possible role of insulin

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the physiological aspects of the aging process, focusing on the role of insulin in carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. Topics addressed include the composition of the human body, the secretion rate of insulin with age, protein synthesis, and insulin sensitivity.
