Article Abstract:
Experiments were conducted to investigate the combined effects of removal of the adrenal gland and chemically-induced castration on energy balance in rats. Results indicate that the development of obesity following castration in rats involves the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Adrenalectomy weakened the increased gain in body weight, fat and energy in chemically castrated female rats. This data suggests a possible interaction between adrenal glands and ovaries in regulating energy balance.

Article Abstract:
Menaquinone (vitamin K2) is an important factor in blood clotting that is produced by certain bacteria in the large intestine. Menaquinone absorption in the large intestine was investigated in rats through the in situ loop method. Results indicated that approximately 23% of bacteria-synthesized menaquinone was absorbed in the colon. This, however may show considerable individual variations and dependence on colon flora.

Article Abstract:
The effect of changes in maternal dietary carbohydrate on amniotic fluid composition was investigated. The effect of nutritionally-induced changes in amniotic fluid composition on maternal or fetal metabolism at fetal maturity. Results showed that the amniotic fluid composition could be influenced by maternal diet and that it could possibly be used as an index of carbohydrate metabolism in the developing fetus.
