The California Wine Experience was an wine appreciation event held in November, 1998 in San Francisco, CA. Wines from California as well as the rest of the world were showcased. Future shows will be held in other American cities. A highlight of the 1998 event was the Wine Spectator Distinguished Service award which was presented to Julia Child.

Some Asian restaurants now offer wine to diners. At the 1998 California Wine Experience in San Francisco, CA chef Mark Miller conducted a seminar on wines and Asian food. The best wines for most Asian food are complex and fruity. Pinot Noir and some Syrah complements poultry. Wine tends to complement Asian food far better than does beer.

Prime vineyard land in the Napa Valley region has reached record price levels, with some parcels selling for $100,000 an acre. The simple rule of supply and demand is to blame, as consumer demand for fine Napa Valley wines rises. Deals can still be found, however, especially for undeveloped land in subappellations of the area.
