Greece makes some truly fine wines, to the surprise of many. Of its 300 different indigenous varieties of grapes, Assyriko, the speciality of the volcanic island Santorni, makes particularly fine wines. Greek wines are made in such small quantities, they are often too expensive to export.

Rose wines are the best wines to take when the weather is hot. High temperatures greatly affect wine flavor, which is marked by the oaky taste, the alcohol and the fruit concentration. Rose wines from the Chateau de Sours, Cinsault and Syrah are recommended.
