The extremely long-lived, invariably expensive Riesling, known for its intense sweet dessert-style wines combines richness with delicacy in an ethereal balance of sweetness, acidity and low alcohol. The acidity in Riesling remains refreshing and keeps the wine from being heavy or cloying.

The top Riesling's of Austria come from Wachau, Kremstal, and Kamptal regions of Lower Austria. Almost all of the Riesling's planted in Austria originate from granite, gneiss, quartzite and slate soils situated on some of the oldest rock formations.

Austrian wines from 1997 are rated very highly. A tasting of 143 Austrian wines revealed 23 bottles mainly from 1997 that rated 90 to 94 points on the Wine Spectator's 100-point scale. Riesling and Gruner Veltliner stand out in particular.
