California's 1997 vintage of cabernet sauvignon wines is discussed with emphasis on its excellent quality. 1997 saw the production of the century's best wines which are rich in color and flavor especially the ones from Napa Valley.

The 1996 California Pinot Noir vintage was poor compared to other years, though the wine is drinkable, if a little austere. California Vintners are attempting new cultivation methods, though the weather dominates the character of the wine. The 1997 crop appears to be more promising.

A number of new California vintners are producing some fine Cabernet wines. veteran winemaker Bill Arbios is now making his own wine. Napa Valley vintners at such estates as Delectus, Oliver Caldwell Cellars, Paoletti Vineyards, Ristow, Lokoya and Lail Vineyards are also briefly profiled.
