The red wines of Bordeaux's first-growth wine estates set the standards for red wines around the world. Margaux, Latour, Lafite, Mouton and Haut-Brion are the five top-ranked first-growths that are located in two of the four key subappellations of the Medoc and farther afield in the district of Pessac-Leognan, extending beyond the outskirts of the city of Bordeaux.

The 2001 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is chosen as the Wine of the Year for 2006. The Sangiovese-based red from Tuscany, Italy, exhibits an exceptional intensity of blackberry, chocolate and lightly toasted oak and an excellent texture of ripe, flavorful fruit and velvety tannins, while possessing early drinkability and long life.
