Syrah and Syrah-based wines from California, along with Rhone-style Grenache and Viognier wines, are seeing a great upswing in quality, but remain underappreciated and lack a wide following. Some of them include Colgin Syrah Napa Valley IX Estate 2004, Shafer Relentless Napa Valley 2003, and Cline Viognier Sonoma Coast 2005.

Confusing price with quality

Wine prices are based on supply and demand. An expensively priced wine is not necessarily an excellent one, and buyers are paying for image, prestige, and reputation. Vintners will sometimes overprice their wines on the basis of ego.
