California Chardonnay's consistent excellence has resulted in its quality being taken for granted by its lovers, as a result of which, California Chardonnay may be on the verge of becoming a victim of its own success. The factor of consistent very good weather and new technology played a role for California Chardonnay running of mostly great vintages dating back to 1990, except for a slight dip in quality in 1998.

A challenging vintage

Article Abstract:

A review of California's 1998 Chardonnays is presented. Overall, the wines were found to be lacking depth, with high acidity and green underdeveloped flavors. The reasons for the relatively poor vintage are explored.
