A century or more in California wine

Article Abstract:

Vintner Don Sebastiani, grandson of winery founder Samuele Sebastiani, presents a report, which shows that 90 percent of all U.S. businesses are family-owned but 30 percent survive past the first generation, as there is a different collection of potential problems endemic to family companies. The Sebastiani and the Kundes both are the only wine making family companies celebrating anniversaries of 100 or 150 years in the year 2004.

Hourglass: no longer racing to beat the clock

Article Abstract:

The Hourglass winery in Napa Valley, CA, was on the point of being sold by the Smith family at the beginning of the 1990s, but replanting with Cabernet Sauvignon has ensured some quality wines are available in 2001.
