A '60 Minutes' segment linking red wine consumption to heart health among the French seems to have had an effect on increased US consumption. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are forbidding vintners to use excerpts from the program to market wine. Few vintners seem to be complaining.

The new 'Dietary Guidelines for Americans' pamphlet, published by the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, cheered the wine industry. Its two sentences on wine history and lower heart disease incidence should make wine less vulnerable to adverse labeling and taxation.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is doing the bidding of the anti-alcohol lobby by persecuting vintners who mention the health benefits of drinking wine in moderation. One small winery simply quoted a '60 Minutes' segment and was told it could not do so.
