2003 Vintage Port: A small crop yields great wines

Article Abstract:

The 2003 vintage is very close to the legendary vintage of 1994 and these young ports are some of the best in years, showing fabulous aromas, ripe fruit and rich, powerful tannins. A large part of this success is due to the generosity of Mother Nature, who delivered a superb growing season in the Douro Valley, the delimited vineyard area in Portugal for Port but a lot has to be credited to the innovations and improvements of vineyards and cellars throughout the valley.

A new benchmark

Article Abstract:

Port wine from the 1994 vintage may be the best wine since 1945. Perfect weather contributed to producing the grapes needed for making the fabulous wines. Among 35 port wines, the Fonseca Vintage Port ($55), Quinta do Noval Vintage Port Nacional ($400) and the Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port ($55) received perfect scores of 100 points each in a blind tasting.

The 1994 vintage Port wine is the best blend after the 1945 vintage. Perfect weather during the year produced grapes that were best for fermenting the fabuluously structured Ports, including the Fonseca ($55), the Taylor Fladgate ($55), and the Quinta do Noval ($400).
