An abnormal functioning of the thyroid gland causes hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism in postpartum women. Their symptoms include irritability, fatigue, trembling and cold intolerance. Levothyroxine is prescribed for hypothyroidism and propylthiouracil for hyperthyroidism.
