Recycling and composting of solid waste in Russian cities

Article Abstract:

There have been changes in solid domestic waste (SDW) in Russia since 1992. There are now more nonferrous metals in SDW because of the more widespread use of aluminium beer and water cans. The volume of plastic packaging materials has also risen. However, the general ratio of lightly-decomposed organic materials has remained almost unchanged. Composting technology is used at many recycling plants. The yield of compost varies from 60% to 68% of SDW mass.

Aseptic recycling on trial

Article Abstract:

The banning of aseptic juice boxes by the Maine legislature in 1989 led aseptic package suppliers Tetra Pak Inc and Combibloc Inc to launch campaigns promoting the recycling of their multilayered product. Efforts were made to mix aseptic boxes with plastic products and to look for paper mills that can turn them into hydropulp. Economically, however, the success of aseptic carton recycling will depend on consumer acceptance and response to the program.
