Grass roots composting in urban centers

Article Abstract:

Solid waste is collected in nearly every Argentinian city except remote mountain communities or marginal settlements in the large cities. The country generates an average 0.5 kilogram per person per day of urban solid waste, 65% of which is organic material. The treatment and disposal of this waste is not efficiently managed, in general, except in the cities of Buenos Aires and Rosario. Thus, the government launched a waste management and recycling plan in 1992 beginning in three municipalities in the province of Sta. Fe, each with less than 50,000 residents.

More mulching, less waste

Article Abstract:

Arlington County, Virginia, has tried a pilot program to lower the generation of grass clippings and emissions from lawn mowers by granting rebates for low-emission mulching mowers. The county gave $75 for the purchase of electric-powered mulching mowers, $50 for low-emission, gasoline-powered mulching mowers and $25 for manual-reel mowers. The program has been very successful, as many families have replaced high emission mowers with electric or reel mowers. The public awareness of grasscycling and cleaner lawn care technologies has also increased.
