Batch tunnel composting in Europe

Article Abstract:

The volume of batch tunnel composting in Europe is forecast to reach 1,790,000 metric tons in 1998, from 1,000 metric tons in 1988. Batch tunnel composting is not yet firmly established in some European countries, but is being actively adopted in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Italy. Batch tunnel composting systems are made up of insulated boxes in which composting material is connected to a computer-controlled aeration system that recirculates air. Batch tunnel composting has been shown to offer a high level of process control, versatility and almost optimal composting conditions.

Sites and suppliers: German composting systems

Article Abstract:

A three-day composting conference in Kassel, Germany was undertaken by 1,200 participants who discussed the trends, equipment and composting systems of Germany. The three general categories of composting equipment consist of aerated containers, large halls with mechanically turned piles within and the Brikolarre compressed compost brick system. It was shown that open windrow composting is the most common system in Germany and that decentralized and centralized compost sites are located all thoughout the country.

Regionally coordinated composting opportunities: composting view

Article Abstract:

Composting businesses should take advantage of areas where there is high local concentration of organic residuals from industries such as livestock. Establishing composting facilities in these areas can save on transportation costs and also provide a solution to the waste management issue, which is of increasing concern.
