Tracking past and ongoing lemming cycles on the Eurasian tundra

Article Abstract:

Past and ongoing Siberian lemming cycles on the Eurasian tundra have been tracked by the Swedish-Russian Tundra Ecology -94 expedition. The local populations of Siberian lemming do not seem to show synchronous dynamics overall in the area investigated. To compensate for lack of repeated sampling, four estimates were used to find the phase position of the lemming populations at the various sites. Data from four of the 12 investigated sites are presented and it is suggested that the combined approach used may be useful when sampling is possible in only one year, but the sampling should be done at only one phenological stage at all sites.

Ecology of tundra birds: patterns of distribution, breeding and migration along the Northeast Passage

Article Abstract:

Ecology of tundra birds has been studied along the Northeast Passage through an investigation of patterns of distribution, breeding and migration by the Swedish-Russian Tundra Ecology -94 expedition, 1994. Tracking radar on an expedition ship was used, as were visual observations. Basal metabolic rates of waders departing on migration and fuel loads deposited by the migrating waders were recorded. Effects of longitudinal movement in migration for a long-distance passerine migrant, the wheatear, was studied using multiple orientation experiments.

Tundra Northwest 1999: a collaborative challenge in the Arctic

Article Abstract:

Tundra Northwest 1999 will be an Arctic Swedish-Canadian collaborative challenge, an icebreaker-based expedition intended to cover terrestrial and freshwater ecology. Some 70 scientists will go through the Canadian High Arctic using the Northwest Passage twice in one season. Pant-animal interactions, bird migration and navigation, biodiversity, freshwater ecology, ecotoxicology and bioclimatology will be focuses. The Louis S. St-Laurent, a Candian vessel, is to be the expedition ship.
