Energy input and species diversity patterns in microcosms

Article Abstract:

The laboratory microcosm system, of protists and bacteria, is used to study the reactions of artificially constructed communities to an energy gradient, on a long timescale and simultaneously analyzing the response of each species individually to the environmental conditions across the gradient. It was observed that more diversity loss was seen in multispecies systems as compared to a single species system indicating that enrichment changed species interaction.

Consumer diversity mediates invasion dynamics at multiple trophic levels

Article Abstract:

The effects of mobile crustacean grazer diversity (species richness) were tested on the establishment of invaders at multiple trophic levels in flow-through seagrass mesocosms. It was found that increasing diversity of resident grazers reduced population growth and biomass of experimentally introduced grazers.
