Climate change in the Seychelles: Implications for water and coral reefs

Article Abstract:

Changes in regional climate iIn Seychelles such as sea-level rise, changes in precipitation and elevated sea-surface temperature are affecting many physical and biological systems, which have an impact on social and economic systems. It is therefore necessary to take urgent action to address climate change at the global level and to develop robust adaptation strategies such as a need for improved water-resource management to meet the change in the rainfall pattern, protection of coral reefs from bleaching.

Climate change and its impacts on glaciers and permafrost in the Alps

Article Abstract:

An increase of 2 degrees celsius in minimum temperatures has dramatically reduced total glacier surface area and volume in the European Alps. During the 20th century, glacier surface area has dropped between 30% to 40%, and volume has fallen by 10% to 20%. The temperature increase may be attributable to climatic carbon dioxide, and can result in pronounced environmental imbalances in vegetation growth, mass wasting processes and the water cycle.

Permafrost and changing climate: The Russian perspective

Article Abstract:

The impact of changing climate on permafrost is highlighted. Climatic change together with the other changing environmental factors is likely to cause warming, deeper seasonal thawing and shrinking of permafrost and changes of permafrost have important implications for natural systems, humans and the economy of the northern lands since thawing permafrost adversely affects the infrastructure constructed on it.
