Aquatic plants in relation to environmental factors in northern Spain

Article Abstract:

A study of aquatic plants in relation to environmental factors in the rivers of Biscay in northern Spain indicates a possible connection between the absence of aquatic plants and the presence of pollution. Frequency of plant occurrence in river waters is also related to the physical and chemical variables of water. Plant density is higher in areas with a concentration of chlorine, and very little where ammonium, the main source of pollution, is present. Despite being clean, there are fewer plants in slopy river headwaters. Dense growth is observed in organic rich downstream zones.

Saltwater intrusion into the coastal plains of the Lower Mary River, Northern Territory, Australia

Article Abstract:

Changes have been taking place in the coastline of the Lower Mary River in Northern Territory, Australia, since the 1940s, including the rising incidence of salt water intrusion into the plains' freshwater wetlands. Several factors may have caused the changes, such as direct human effects, sea-level change, buffalo impact, rainfall variability, consolidation and compaction of the plains and a natural cycle of change. The changes could also serve as an example of how to manage coastal lowlands in Australia and show how any rise in sea level could engender widespread salinization.

Management of river water for irrigation to mitigate soil salinization on a coastal wetland

Article Abstract:

The Axios River delta wetland in northern Greece is an important conservation area. The flora and fauna of the delta has been affected by salinization due to the interruption of discharge at the mouth of the river. A study aimed to develop a way to manage the water resources of the agro-ecosystem damaged by inefficient use of irrigation water on neighbouring areas. The system was based on fully distributed real time inputs using a Geographic Information System.
