Amchitka's volatile inheritance

Article Abstract:

Radioactive leakage is taking place at the Cannikin nuclear weapons test sites of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) at Amchitka Island in Alaska. The volcanic island consists of a large number of fissures which are exacerbated by the nuclear blasts. This in turn activates radioactive leakage. Water from aquifers flows over the surface of the test sites, taking large quantities of radioactive materials into the sea. A comprehensive radiological and chemical monitoring program should be planned to assess the extent of radioactive leakage.

Alaskans decry interior's offshore and gas program

Article Abstract:

Alaskans protest the Department of the Interior's (DOI) plan to open the Alaskan waters for oil and gas exploration. The DOI's five year leasing plan is being opposed by Alaskan Native Traditional Councils, city councils, borough governments and citizens. Communities relying heavily on the coastal regions for their survivalseem not to have been accurately represented.

Native Alaskans are managing Congress-created corporations to augment their subsistence. However, in their efforts to increase corporate profits, these Alaskans may be destroying their native land. Alaska's 13 native-owned corporations reportedly make up the biggest group of natural resources extractors in the state.
