The article describes an experiment in which an artificial feedback loop was used to study aquatic plant respiration and production. The feedback loop consisted of a computerized light source that would turn on and off based on assigned levels of respiration and production. Poor links between respiration and productivity and similarities in energy demand support a holistic, or cybernetic, approach to ecosystems.
