A diplomatic precedent: EEC becomes member of FAO

Article Abstract:

The European Economic Community was granted membership in the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) during its 26th session in Nov. 1991. The FAOs governing conference approved the membership of the regional economic integration organization, a position previously given only to independent nations. The precedent set by the EEC membership will henceforth allow other similar organizations to apply for membership in FAO. The November conference also took up the adoption of the FAOs technical and economic program for 1992-93, the US$645.6 million budget, as well as the FAOs first Medium Term Plan for 1992 to 1997.

Quagga quarrel: an ersatz equine, or foal of a truly different stripe?

Article Abstract:

A recently born foal in South Africa's Vrolijkheid Breeding Centre is stirring controversy among geneticists and zoologists. Some it claim to be a resurrected quagga, an extinct animal similar to the horse which lived in Southern Africa a century ago. Geneticists at the Breeding Centre carried out experiments intending to get back the extinct quagga through selective breeding of plains zebras. Other scientists commented, however, that the external characteristics of some species may be breeded back, but they will never be the original ones.
