Article Abstract:
The Montana National Forest Management Act has been criticized because it will permit logging, road building, oil drilling and mining on four million acres of national forest land in Montana. This might lead to the decimation of many wildlife species, such as the grizzly bears, caribou and gray wolves. The bill provides for the Forest Service to market timber without carrying out any environmental impact studies and restrains judicial review of timber sales and citizens' rights to challenge timber sales from public lands.

Article Abstract:
The US Forest Service is bent on facilitating the clearcutting of forests even when such logging violates federal environmental laws. Employees of the Service who have spoken out against the mismanagement of the forests have been reassigned. The Forest Service seems to be acting in the service of business interests that encourage the development of mineral resources, grazing, logging and oil drilling in the national forests.
