The new James Bond, Pierce Brosnan has boycotted the French premiere of his film, 'Goldeneye' to support protestations by Greenpeace against French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. France conducted its last test in the South Pacific on Jan 27, 1996. Intense global protests have impelled France to reduce the series of nuclear tests and sign the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty. These moves are expected to eventually shut down French nuclear testing sites at the Moruroa and Fangataufa atolls in the South Pacific.

Sailing vessels belonging to Greenpeace participated in the peaceful global protest against French nuclear weapons testing program at the Moruroa atoll in the South Pacific. The M/V Greenpeace, the Manutea, and the Vega sailed from San Francisco to lend support to Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior. Although the Rainbow Warrior and M/V Greenpeace suffered at the hands of the French commandos, they extracted a promise from the French to keep the South Pacific nuclear free.

France has announced a one year moratorium on nuclear weapons testing in the South Pacific due to efforts from Greenpeace. The Greenpeace ship, Rainbow Warrior, was instrumental in protesting nuclear weapons testing in the South Pacific. France gave way to theenvironmentalists due to their support in national elections and other activities. Greenpeace now plans to target the Nevada testing site in the US asthe focus of its activities.
