The insurance firm has invested in long-term convenience technologies that include ice chiller systems, energy-efficient windows and cellular in-floor management system for wire and cable. EMC's building is also constructed with steel raceway that supports its concrete structure and secures wiring and cabling. The system allows changes in floor plans with the development in communications and computer technology.

Internet search engine Excite's new backup power system is made up of two 1,250-kw generator sets, to provide emergency power and redundancy. Excite also has an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to supply electricity while the gensets come up to speed. The gensets were designed as a paralleled system that start up when the UPS takes over during a power outage. The active generator will continue running for 15 minutes before the transfer switches go back to the outside supply when normal power resumes.

The building-automation system (BAS) in Allstate's Southwest Data Center has been designed to accomodate for future growth. The BAS is equipped with a fire system gateway that is integrated with the facility's automatic sprinkler system. The system also monitors heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, thermal-storage systems, fire-alarm and safety equipment. The BAS also has trending and alarm tools that improve system reliability.
