UL launches full plumbing certification

Article Abstract:

Underwriters Laboratories Inc (UL) has come up with a unified process to test and certify plumbing products for performance, health effects and life-cycle standards. The effort is intended to minimize the certification process for these equipment, which previously received separate certifications for every product type. The move also entailed the creation of a full range of laboratories, testing procedures, equipment and expertise in the past two years.

UL investigates O-ring seals on fire sprinklers

Article Abstract:

Northbrook, IL-based Underwriters Laboratories is investigating a class of fire sprinklers, with O-ring water seals, that may be defective. Models with O-ring water seals may leak or become inoperable in a fire since they need a higher water pressure than is normally available in buildings. The testing of about 90 samples has suggested that around 20% of this type of sprinklers did not operate at a water pressure of 5 lbs per sq in nor at 7 psi.
