Article Abstract:
The effects of three tool transfer policies on transport times and tool transportation frequency in a flexible manufacturing system are studied. These are the E-rule wherein a tool is transferred to another machine as soon as an operation is finished, L-rule where an available tool from a machine that needs the tool the latest is assigned to a calling machine and the S-rule where a calling machine receives a tool from a machine for which transport time is minimal.

Article Abstract:
A model is developed to analyze the effects of different tool room layouts on production. Three tool management options are considered, namely, kit management, pooled machining centers and machining center tool stores. Performance is based on the average waiting times of items of be machined. Results show that pooling provides the shortest waiting time and is the most practical alternative in terms of complication and cost.

Article Abstract:
Simulation models are developed for three supply chain redesign strategies for the personal computer industry. The models simulate the application of just-in-time strategy in manufacturing plants, development of a global materials planning system and the elimination of distribution networks in favor of direct contact with customers. It is shown that redesign strategies translated into improved supply chain performance.
