The nominal group technique can play a valuable role in problem solving. It allows a type of brainstorming in which all those involved participate equally in sharing ideas about the causes of a particular problem. The technique is most effective when a problem has several different causes and the team is uncertain which cause should be analyzed first. Each team member produces ideas about causes of the problem, and these are collected by the facilitator. Each participant chooses up to five ideas he or she sees as important, and ranks them. The facilitator collects the rankings and calculates the points received by each idea.

The best problem-solving techniques are usually simple. It is necessary to identify the most pressing problem whose solution might lead to solutions for other minor problems. After the main problem has been identified, an objective must be set. Provided the objectives are met, standards must then be established to maintain the improvement that has been experienced. After resolving one of the problems, efforts must then be focused on the next pressing dilemma.
