Rubbish recycled into high value products

Article Abstract:

A report on 100% design and 100% details exhibitions, where three innovative ways of re-using waste materials to make new products, is presented. Decorative board can be made from old synthetic carpets, old gas pipes, communication ducts and food containers are recycled into materials that resemble marble, and old green bottles are recycled into a decorative glass ceramic that is stronger than granite.

Devices swallow energy on demand

Article Abstract:

The construction of compact, low cost and infinitely re-usable devices that absorb large or small amounts of mechanical energy, is possible by forcing solid material to deform as it passes round a bend in a closed channel. Applications range from multi-use car impact crash absorbers, through rotary mechanical and building earthquake dampers, to protective materials for sportsmen.

Electrostatics sorts and saves

Article Abstract:

The ELREC (Electrostatic Recovery of paper and packaging wastes) project, set up by the European Union with the objective of developing and demonstrating a practical household-waste recycling plant, was completed in December 2000.
