Quality you can bank on: a Texas blood center discovers the benefits of ISO certification

Article Abstract:

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in San Antonio, TX, was the first blood and tissue center in North America to gain ISO 9002 accreditation. The certification process positively affected all the center's services. Extensive system redesigns were undertaken for activities including error and accident management, contract review and process change control, and the internal auditing process led to an ongoing opportunity for improvement. Gaining ISO registration forms the basis for establishing a quality management system.
