Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to evaluate the method of production control for kanban-like systems with defective manufactures. The study considers a model of the production system which is compared with alternative product test sites and focuses on the impact of improving production quality. Results show that close inspection of production sources yields benefits. In addition, attempts at improving quality should begin with downstream processes.

Just-in-time (JIT) production systems have exhibited exceptional support to increasing customer satisfaction and improving service when both external and internal system variations are minimized. However, JIT suffers when uncertainty is factored into the process. The vulnerability analysis technique has been introduced to support JIT systems. The method accounts for disruptions in performance and unexpected events.

The performance of a multi-item, multi-line, multi-stage just in time (JIT) system tends to be affected by the number of Kanbans used. Utilization of a simulation analysis showed that a rise in the number of Kanbans creates a corresponding rise in the system's output rate and utilization. A significant rise in waiting times and work-in-process (WIP) lengths was also observed as the number of Kanbans increases.
