Planck's quantum theory and the laws of chemistry

Article Abstract:

Max Planck (1858-1947), his quantum theory, and the laws of chemistry are discussed. the depth and thoroughness with which he developed his theory are likely not equaled in the history of science. His 1915 lectures at Columbia University were recorded and published and relate the process. Planck concluded, based on the relationship of radiation to entropy, that atoms are electronic oscillators and exist in discrete energy states. Topics include blackbody radiation 100 years ago, Planck's philosophy for scientific research (he avoided the abstract), the chemical basis of Planck's theory, the concept of thermodynamic states, and incompressibility and probabilities.

Liquid membranes with light switches

Article Abstract:

Liquid membranes with light switches, a type of molecular separation system called photofacilitated liquid membranes, with light used to control/enhance solute transport/separation are discussed are discussed by a faculty member at the University of Redlands, and a faculty member and a PhD. candidate at the University of Colorado. Separation of solutes with liquid membranes becomes more powerful when the solute carriers are selectively activated photochemically. Facilitated transport, that is, solute transport by carrier complexation, can be very large vs normal diffusion of solute under certain conditions.

Creativity in research

Article Abstract:

Creativity and innovation are important in the effectiveness of a research program, yet individual exploratory research has been deemphasized in industry and academia, although it is often the source of innovation and creativity. Few companies permit the kind of research that DuPont allowed under Ralph K. Iler, who felt assignments should not interfere with freedom to spend some unaccounted-for time. Discoveries on the solubility of silica came out of that environment. Topics include self-motivation/dedication/hard work, promotion out of research, recognition, the amateur spirit, and exploratory work.
