New design code for countryside

Article Abstract:

A rural White Paper promises a new local design code for the countryside which will promote the re-use of rural buildings for business instead of residential use. It will also include a good practice guide for local planning authorities promoting diversification. There will be consultation on a new rural business class encouraging local authorities to permit local businesses to diversfy without the risk of uncontrolled expansion. Planning authorities will have to link with TEC and government departments to determine the requirement for diversification in their areas.

Article Abstract:

The Local Government Commission has released guidelines on which it will judge cases of district council applications for unitary status. Norwich, Exeter, and Peterborough are among the 15 councils seeking unitary status. The guidelines advise that the Commission will consider councils which help urban regeneration; and it is also to decide whether county towns and rural surroundings should be separated.

Bringing it all back home

Article Abstract:

Home deliveries could reduce the number of car journeys made to supermarkets, according to Dr Elsa Woodward of the High Wycombe Society. Deliveries by supermarkets would reduce car use as well as the amount of land required for out-of-town sites. However, consumers would not want to pay more for deliveries, according to Huw Williams of Sainsbury.
