Article Abstract:
The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) are helping companies increase their level of quality and performance through the Baldrige National Quality Program (BNQP). Baldrige winners are required to help other companies develop and apply the Baldrige criteria to their operations via lectures, seminars and site visits. However, diminishing interests in long-term technology-oriented projects and the decline in funding for NIST called for the creation of newer programs. In 1990, the Advanced Technology Program was established to focus on facilitating communication among companies and between the industry and the research community.

Article Abstract:
The decision to buy a coordinate-measuring machine (CMM) depends primarily on the application it will be used for. It will require consideration of operator skills as well as size, weight and configuration of the component to be measured. At present, CMMs come either in fixed bridged, moving bridge, horizontal arm, cantilever, gantry and portable designs. Their suitability for different applications is demonstrated by several manufacturers such as Toolco Inc., Inspection Technologies, John Deere Corp., Sombur Machine and Tool Co., Continental Plastics Inc. and Honda of America Manufacturing Inc.

Article Abstract:
United Technologies Automotive Interiors (UTAI), a unit of United Technologies Co., saw the importance of using coordinate measuring machines in measuring parts produced. UTAI decided to purchase PC-DMIS (dimensional-measuring-interface standard), a measurement software, to measure the dimensions of the parts the company produces. Such a decision proved to be rewarding for the company, bringing in significant savings in outsourcing and training costs. The company was also able to increase the work completed by 50% over previous figures.
