Major lighting retrofit yields major savings

Article Abstract:

3Com Corp's, site-wide lighting upgrade at its Santa Clara, CA, facility has resulted in significant cost savings for the computer-networking company. Energy savings reach more than 1,837,000 kilowatt-hours annually, which equates to a return on investment of more than 55%. The lighting upgrade called for the replacement of T12 and antiquated high-intensity discharge lamps with T8 lamps having color-rendering index of 80. Electronic ballasts in one-, two-, three- and four-lamp configurations were also installed in the facility.

Busway saves auto assembler downtime and overtime

Article Abstract:

Ford Motor Co.'s use of busway systems generates savings in facility downtime and labor expenses. The busway, used in many of the automobile manufacturers plants for providing power for assembly-line lighting and fans, saves on overhead by letting workers install the needed lighting or any electrical equipment without the need to shut off the entire system. The busway, which are equipped with in-line fuses, also eliminated the need for professional electrical service for easy-to-install lighting requirements.

Lighting controls meet energy standards

Article Abstract:

Ford Motor Co's minivan assembly plant in Oakville, Ontario, was able to meet the company's energy-efficiency standards by modernizing the plant's lighting system. The key to the automation of the plant's lighting system was the use of remotely operated circuit breakers. The new lighting system started operating in Jan 1998 and is expected to deliver payback in energy savings in two years.
