Article Abstract:
There was a great deal of dissention at the National Conference of the Joint Industry Board (JIB) for the Electrical Contracting Industry held in Apr 1992 about widening membership eligibility. Representatives from employers opposed moves to enrol electricians not working in contracting industries onto the JIB Register of Electricians. The delegates of the union considered this to be a good way to strengthen the union at a time when Europe is becoming so important. Many considered the JIB should remain as independent from commercial bodies as possible but others saw the advantages that could be gained in the single European market.

Contractors will have to pay greater attention to the installation of information technology cables in buildings under an EEC directive on Electromagnetic Compatibility. At present, cables are hidden away under raised floors. From 1995, installers and manufacturers will have to make sure their cables will not affect other equipment, and that they avoid interference.

The UK Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 makes contractors liable under law for late completion and potential damages incurred by future building owners. Contractors are advised to remove the clause from future contracts to ensure no third party liability.
