Article Abstract:
The performance of four different combinations of single-pass and multiple-pass heuristic algorithms in solving bi-level group scheduling problems is evaluated with respect to average makespan, mean rank, percentage best solution and average computational time. The problem, which is encountered in cellular manufacturing, pertains to the computation of parts sequences within a parts family at one level and the sequencing of groups of jobs at the next level. Experiential data show that a combination of an LN heuristic and a PT heuristic outperforms the other three combinations.

Article Abstract:
Several operating factors served as the basis in the comparison of cellular and functional manufacturing systems. The major factors included in the analysis are machine breakdown and batch size. The use of the mean work-in-process as a performance measure shows that the preference of a layout is not determined by the repair policy. For small batch size, the cellular layout is the widely chosen structure while the functional layout is preferred for large batch size.

Article Abstract:
An analysis of the conversion from a functional manufacturing system to a cellular manufacturing system is presented. The analysis considers the conversion case for the parts manufacturing plant (PMP) of Freightliner Corp. Results show that the conversion process benefits PMP management. These benefits include set-up time reduction, simplified parts and tools flows, centrality of responsibility and better human relations.
