Ceramics thrive in two-way stretch

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the University of Leeds, Leeds, England, have discovered a method of improving on lead zirconate titanate, PZT, which is used in digital watches and mobile phones. The new electrostrictive material, lead magnesium niobate titante or PMNT, has been made 99.7% to 99.8% dense. It is predicted the cost of producing PMNT will fall once is is produced in volume. Exposure to high electric fields will not make PMNT degrade. PMNT could also be used in inkjet print heads and autofocus cameras.

Performance - at a price!

Article Abstract:

The need for increased competitiveness and energy savings has stimulated the development of engineering advanced control systems. Advanced control enables strategy changes to meet varying conditions. H-Infinity control, neural networks and fuzzy logic techniques may reduce fuel costs and improve performance. H-Infinity and fuzzy logic require pre-programming but neural networks have a self-learning facility. However, typical setting-up costs range from 10,000-20,000 pounds sterling.
