Article Abstract:
The 16th edition of the Institute of Electrical Engineers' Regulations contains several important changes relating to agricultural and horticultural environments. These are intended to overcome the particular problems that can be present in farm surroundings. Shock protection is vital, and conditions in most farms are such that a low voltage fault could kill. Even non fatal shocks could panic animals. Much material in these surroundings is also very combustible and some explosive. The new regulations cover both protection and positioning between systems and potential hazards.

Article Abstract:
The Selection and Erection Guidance Notes to the 16th edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations are of little use to the practical installer. Some useful advice on protection from shock and overcurrent is given in the final sections, particularly on the effects of water. However, there is not enough practical information on fire and smoke and the section on cable sizes is out of date and disappointing. Overall, there is too much theoretical material and the Guidance Notes are disappointing.

Article Abstract:
Overcurrent protection includes the use of conventional rewireable fuses, which although inexpensive, have a low capacity for fault breaking. Other options include cartridge fuses which perform extremely well technically, and the residual current breaker/overcurrent, and miniature circuit breakers, which are reliable but expensive.
