Article Abstract:

Global forums such as the international environmental conference held in parallel to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Nov 1995 are vital if full protection of the environment is to be ensured. The Commonwealth offers a stable structure for further debate, and is in a position to bring together local progress on environmental issues and a global perspective. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, held every two years, is a very valuable opportunity for environmentalists to ensure that their views are heard.

Issues of traffic congestion were raised due to the number of Retirement Vehicle (RV) owners, raising a strong case for a local fuel tax. His visit coincided with a major festival concentrating on a wildlife conservation theme.
