R&D management executives are pursuing environmental concerns and are serious about developing environmentally safe products. To accomplish this, research and development (R&D) activities should involve choosing the correct planning methods, adopting the appropriate review processes and systems and promoting innovative approaches. In addition, R&D management should work together with other key departments in the firm to develop a unified environmental philosophy.

R&D/technology managers should look for ways to help their researchers cope with organizational changes brought on by the appointment of a new CEO. A hypothetical situation in which a researcher finds his project being shelved in favor of a more economically feasible project is presented. The researcher's supervisor decided to hold a departmental workshop so that his employees would know the changes' possible effects on them.

The IRI/CIMS R&D Database is used by companies as a valuable source of information related to R&D. The database contains a profile of firms based on the percentage of funds allocated to centralized, decentralized and hybrid R&D activities. It also presents data on how the total R&D spending is spread across applied and basic research, product and process development as well as technical service.
