Article Abstract:
A new accelerometer has been developed which is one thousand times more responsive than traditional accelerometers. The system uses a hot air bubble to measure the temperature difference from one side of the bubble to the other. The accelerometer can then work out how much the bubble has moved and produce an acceleration figure. The car industry will be interested in this new device because it uses more than 100 million sensors annually, at a cost of between $5 to $8 each. The new device can be made for less than one dollar.

Article Abstract:
New technology to test emissions has been developed and is currently being used in fossil fuel burning power plants. The Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) simulates typical driving cycles and can analyse particulate size and mass of exhaust emissions in real time. It could be used in other areas of industry and filter manufacturers could benefit.
