A rule-based analytic interface

Article Abstract:

Vanguard Software Corp's $495 HyperCalc 2.0 mathematical software provides strong mathematical functions as well as user-interface windows. A particularly strong feature is the software's ability to use physical units consistently throughout calculations. The package can also produce and work with matrices with elements that are functions of elements in other matrices. The hierarchical tree editor allows users to break problems down into parts that are easier to work with. Users can analyze problems one step at a time, storing functions in model files and retrieving them with the interactive hierarchical editor. The interface provides convenient pull-down menus, and the on-line help system has a useful hyperlink capability. Installation is simple, and documentation is complete. The demo program is available both as full source text and in binary format. European users may have problems with the program's use of keys not on European keyboards.

Graphical analysis in Windows

Article Abstract:

Interactive Data Language (IDL) for Windows, from Research Systems Inc, is a powerful applications development software package priced at $1500. The software is user friendly, offers on-line help and consists of statistics, user and widget libraries. System requirements for running IDL for Windows include MS Windows 3.1 or higher and an 80386-based or 80486-based microcomputer with 8Mbytes memory. IDL is most effective when the user writes procedure scripts into a structured-language syntax loosely based on APL. IDL for Windows features animation support and support for seven types of widget: organization, text support, button and slider inputs that mimic familiar switch and potentiometer inputs, and the graphics interface.
