A road test for lighting
Article Abstract:
The Workplace Directive and the Building Regulations and the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations state that emergency lighting must show the way to exits and these lights must be clearly visible if the normal lights fail. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 dictate that the signs need to be maintained and repaired regularly and they should have an independent power supply. Many companies will need to be checked to see if their safety lighting meets current safety standards and this opens up business opportunities for electrical contractors.

Euro laws will bring business
Article Abstract:
European legislation relating to emergency lighting is to be implemented in Britain during 1993-4. The new laws will require all work premises to have adequate emergency lighting and signage which should conform to specified standards and be regularly maintained. Electrical contractors should take advantage of the opportuinites for business by offering to survey clients' existing provisions and to provide maintenance contracts. Standards are also changing and Industry Committee for Emergency Lighting (ICEL) certified products should be used.
