Article Abstract:
A hierarchical production planning approach for energy intensive industries such as the tile industry is developed. A mathematical model, which reduces energy costs through an adjustment of lot sizes jointly with their loading charts, is proposed. The planning tools are integrated within a decision support framework that leads to the Hierarchical Decision Support System. Using the system enables the elimination of possible inconsistencies in the production plan by providing an effective interaction with the decision maker.

Article Abstract:
A production planning system allows make-to-order companies to succesfully deal with problems brought about by due date setting. The system provides for efficient capacity and lead time management that makes it possible to set attainable due dates using a Master Production Schedule (MPS). Specifically designed for the family structure of the bottleneck department of the planning horizon, MPS also provides order due dates and production quantities of product categories belonging to orders of clients.

Article Abstract:
A model was developed to assess the implication of setup times on actual productivity, specifically to find the optimum setup utilization for the effective processing of production batches and the determination of batch size. Results of the queueing delay batching model showed 17.5% as the optimum setup utilization level that can be used as a basis for computing batch sizes to reduce waiting times in the production queue.
