Airport escalates savings

Article Abstract:

The escalators in Hawaii's Honolulu International Airport were supplied by a solid-state motor controller to detect load drops and adjust its energy to 80% in order to optimize its electrical conversion. Without the motor controller, the escalators' motors wasted electrical energy and heat whenever loads were less than 80%. Tests conducted on the electrical output of the escalators indicated that the controller lowered daily kilowatt consumption for the down escalator by 27% and 29% for the up escalator.
