Hardware and software selections for Macintosh considerably declined in 1998, as revealed by the year's Electronic Data-Acquisition Guide issued by Quality magazine. Selections for UNIX-based software Switching systems likewise dropped, plummeting by 50% compared to previous results. On the other hand, the selection rate of Windows NT showed modest improvements, while Windows 95 packages remained unchanged.

The Tram Monitor developed by Ed Malczewski of Riverwest Engineering and Design Co is designed to monitor the movement of milling-machine heads during machining. With this development, machinists can expect considerable reduction in tramming time and constant feedback of the milling head's tram status. The project is made feasible and easier with the use of a computer-aided-design software called CADKY.
