U.S. dealers fine-tune DVD pricing to keep user appetites keen

Sales of DVD players in the US will double from shipments of 4 million to dealers in 1999 to 8 million or 9 million units in 2000, according to manufacturers. This is equivalent to 6.5 million-7.5 million new DVD consumers. Also, 88% of these sales, according to Craig Eggers, Director of Product Planning for DVDs at Toshiba America, have been for units retailing at $299 or less. With no shortages in components, sales of the products in the US might even total to 10 million-11 million units by the end of 2000.

DVD platters dish out varied fare to entertainment-hungry public

Industry observers predict that demand for DVD players worldwide for calendar 2000 will reach 17 million units, up from the the previous projection of 12 million units. The US alone will represent for around 10 million units of the total, while demand for DVD products in Europe will increase to 4 million units, which is twice the figure in 1999. For this reason, DVD makers in Japan plan to double their production in year 2000, with many manufacturers shifting production to China and Malaysia.

DVD revolution gains strength in Japan as vendors marshall software forces

Article Abstract:

Shipments of DVD players in the Japanese market in 1999 reached 440,000 units, a a growth of 75% from FY 1998. In May 1999, shipments of the products rose to 64% from the same month a year ago. Since then, shipments have increased consistently at least 90% from the corresponding month of last year, with the exception in February 2000 where shipments increased only 36%, compared with the previous year. In March, shipments of DVD players rebounded, then soared 110% from Mar 1999.
